Membership

Our true nature as Christians is corporate. The gospel creates the Church, where reconciliation with God is displayed through reconciliation with one another. On the final Day, we will gather as one Church with every Christian who has ever existed. Until then, the universal Church is made visible in local churches.

The Bible speaks of the church as a flock, a body, a household, and an assembly. It is an assembly of God’s people who, in one sense, form the geography of His kingdom when they come together to show what it’s like to be His people under His rule. The local church is like an embassy - an outpost of God’s new creation - filled with ambassadors of His kingdom who are called to represent Him here and now.

All believers are called to personally respond to the gospel and enjoy a personal relationship with the Father through the Son. But while our relationship to God is a deeply personal one, it is never merely a private affair. Throughout the history of redemption, God has been acting to save a people, not just a disconnected group of isolated individuals.

At Maranatha Grace Church, we believe that the Bible teaches that we are to glorify God through our lives with other Christians in the context of a local church. This is what we call “church membership.” But we want to be clear that the term ‘membership’ should not be confused with how the 21st century West has come to think of it, which is usually affiliated with some sort of club that receives benefits or amenities in exchange for a subscription fee. Rather, the term ‘membership’ refers to the scriptural idea that we are all members of Christ’s body; that we are a visible body of committed believers who serve as a visible witness in our community as we steward God’s many graces and gifts for the building up of the body of Christ.

Whether it is Maranatha Grace Church or another local gospel-preaching church, our prayer is that God would lead you to where you can commit yourself to His people in service to Him, until you see Him face to face.
